Higher Altitude > Base layer

Thermal underwear must be soft, moisture-wicking, warm and synthetic, not cotton. Cotton does not have any moisture-wicking properties at all. It soaks up moisture and traps it in the fabric, creating a cold, chafing layer next to the skin. On Kilimanjaro this could lead to potentially lethal hypothermia.
